Scholarships are available for Indigenous Australians to study overseas at Oxford, Cambridge and Harvard. Funding is available for either a masters, a PhD program or executive development programs.
Charlie Perkins Scholarships
Each year, two postgraduate scholarships are available for Indigenous students to study at Oxford or Cambridge universities.
The scholarships cover:
- university and college fees
- travel costs and £13,800 (2010) per year for living expenses.
Roberta Sykes Postgraduate Scholarships
Postgraduate scholarships are available for Indigenous students to study at any overseas university. The scholarship provides supplementary financial assistance (up to $30,000) for the period of one year, paid directly to the recipient in equal installments at the start of each semester or term subject to satisfactory academic progress.
Roberta Sykes Harvard Club Scholarship
The Roberta Sykes Indigenous Education Foundation and the Harvard Club of Australia fund the Roberta Sykes Harvard Club Scholarship (RSHCS).
The scholarship provides:
- financial support to Indigenous Australians undertaking postgraduate study for up to three years at Harvard University.
- university and college fees, travel costs and living expenses up to $60,000 per annum to be paid over the course of the scholar’s study.
At any point in time, only one student will study at Harvard on a RSHCS. This scholarship is offered in the year following the expiry of the tenure of the previous recipient.
Roberta Sykes Overseas Research Scholarships
Partial funding is available for Indigenous postgraduate students to undertake research, at a recognised overseas academic institution, as part of their Australian postgraduate study program. The period of study can vary from a few months to a year. The value of the scholarship is up to $20,000, depending on the period of study.
Roberta Sykes Scholarships for Short Executive Programs
Partial funding is provided for Indigenous Australians to undertake short executive courses at recognised overseas academic institutions. The value of the Scholarship is up to $20,000.
Lisa Fox Indigenous Fellowship Program at New York University
A new fully-funded, postgraduate fellowship opportunity is now being administered by the Aurora Project. The Lisa Fox Indigenous Fellowship Program will enable one Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander student each year to undertake postgraduate study in a Masters (MA) or Doctoral (PhD) program at New York University (NYU), commencing in September 2012.
