Indigenous scholarship guidebooks
Our scholarship guidebooks assist Indigenous students to source funding and learn more about university study across Australia and overseas.
Undergraduate Guide
The Indigenous students’ guide to undergraduate scholarships in Australia (the Undergraduate Guide), is designed for Indigenous students in Years 10-12, their parents and carers, careers advisers and guidance counsellors, and mature age Indigenous Australians considering tertiary study.
The Undergraduate Guide contains:
- over 300 Australian undergraduate scholarships available for Indigenous students
- a preface by the Governor General, Her Excellency Ms Quentin Bryce and a foreword by Deborah Mailman
- reflections from Rebecca Richards, the first Indigenous Rhodes Scholar, and Paul Gray and Christian Thompson, the inaugural Charlie Perkins Scholars, who are currently studying at Oxford
- personal reflections from successful graduates and current university students about their experiences at university
- information on alternative entry schemes and preparatory programs aimed at Indigenous students
- information to assist high school students and prospective mature age students to decide whether undergraduate study is for them, including:
- how much does it cost?
- what is a scholarship and how do I apply?
- where can I study?
- how do I get into university?
- explanation of terms.
Postgraduate Guide
In 2009, Aurora launched the Indigenous students’ guide to postgraduate scholarships in Australia and overseas (the Postgraduate Guide).
The Postgraduate Guide contains:
- 88 scholarships for study in Australia; 64 being specifically for Indigenous students or related to Indigenous studies, and the remaining 24 targeting particular groups, including Indigenous Australians
- 33 scholarships for study at overseas universities, including general scholarships to the UK, US and Canada, and a number of scholarships specifically for Indigenous students, such as:
- Charlie Perkins Scholarships (for study at the University of Oxford or Cambridge)
- Fulbright Indigenous Scholarships (for study in the United States)
- Roberta Sykes Scholarships (for postgraduate study at overseas universities)
- Ron Castan Memorial Indigenous Peoples' Scholarships (for a Masters in Public Health at the Hebrew University in Israel)
- a preface by former Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd
- a foreword by Tom Calma, former Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner
- a section by Professor Lynette Russell, on issues to consider about postgraduate study
- information on the annual Indigenous postgraduate summer school in Melbourne by Professor Marcia Langton
- reflections from 32 prominent Indigenous postgraduates
How to find the Guides
Undergraduate
The Aurora Project has distributed copies of the Undergraduate Scholarships Guide to all Australian universities.
Available free of charge, you can collect your copy of the guide from the Indigenous Higher Education Unit on-campus.
Postgraduate
The Postgraduate Scholarships Guide 2009/10 Edition is currently out of print and therefore unavailable. Over time we will be including postgraduate scholarship opportunities on our new website www.indigenousscholarships.com.au
